Introduction

In this module we focused on AI and Data Visualization Tools. In my post I will primarily be focusing on Artificial Intelligence and my experience using AI tools. My experience with AI tools is very little, I was mostly interested in how ChatGPT works. I think the advantages and disadvantages of AI are very prominent within our world today. Schools are experiencing higher activity of plagiarism while also having new technology that can be used in research. AI is great for resume drafts, data collection, email responses and so much more. I believe that as AI evolves the advantages would outweigh the disadvantages and it is incredibly important that we learn the tools.

I began with using ChatGPT and played around with everything it can do as I had never used it before. I landed on using it for Christmas Gifts as the holidays are just around the corner and shopping for my dad becomes impossible. Here is a screenshot of everything ChatGPT listed.

These ideas took around 10 seconds to develop and include incredible detail. I was amazed at not only how fast it worked but how the grammar was correct all spelling was correct and it was formatted in a way that was easy to read. Although this is not helpful in a learning environment it does show the skills AI has and the way it is more than just for educational purposes.

Have you used AI applications before? If you have, what have you used them for? What apps have you come across that are not in the Explore section that you’ve found useful?

I have never used AI applications before mainly because I have had no need for the tools but I have always been interested. I am now more interested than ever in other available AI applications. The only application that may count as using AI is Siri. Siri has been around for years and is a built in application to iPhones that I have used before. However I always found Siri to be incredibly unhelpful and I barely ever take advantage of what it is meant for. I think because if you are to ask Siri for help it sends you to google pages instead of answering the question. I have not found other apps useful but only because I truly have used none.

What guidelines do you think should be in place to guide their use in an educational institution? What factors should be considered?

I believe it may be important to add an AI conversation at the beginning of each class every semester. As well adding AI to the integrity part of all exams & assignments, most universities have the tools to be able to check for AI plagiarism. I think a major factor that should be considered is although AI gives access to easy plagiarism it also has lots of benefits for learning. Educators can use different AI applications for learning as well as students can use for a hands on learning experience. I do understand that AI can be difficult to implicate in an education environment I think all factors of its advantages should be considered.

How might the use of these tools create a more inclusive learning experience? Who might be excluded?

These tools can be difficult to understand and learn how to use. They also involve needing a device. Laptop, desktop, tablet or cellphone are required to use these tools however not everyone has access to these. AI application need to be designed for accessibility. These tools can create an inclusive learning experience by having speech to speech abilities like Amazons Alexa or Apples Siri, they also offer opportunities to boost diversity in workplaces.

What ethical concerns do you have (or not have) about the use of some of these tools?

My concern is that AI becomes so powerful we lose jobs. These tools are already so incredible and still they are very new. We know that as technology ages and evolves it grows into bigger and better tools. I worry that AI takes over jobs, and effects the way people learn. If we depend on AI as time goes on I am concerned that it takes over in negative and unethical way. In a deeper ethical point, privacy is a major concern as well. I question what the privacy will look like as AI evolves, the individual who is using the tool must have their privacy protected. Having a specific

What might you use AI tools for moving forward? What would you not use them for?

I think I will use ChatGPT the most. I would use it for ideas, emails or even questions like what should I have for lunch. I think ChatGPT is the easiest tool I used and gives me the most detailed correct answers. I would not use it in my education it would be all for little everyday tasks.

Where do you think these tools will be in their evolution in 2-3 years’ time?

I think in 2-3 years we will have many more ways to use AI ethically. I believe it will be more accessible within an educational environment and I believe we will have found proper ways to avoid the negative outcomes of AI. I also see AI evolving greatly in 2-3 years and the technology will only advance. We have seen this happen with every piece of technology that is released.

Final Thoughts

This module was my favourite out of the whole semester. I think it was really interesting to see how we can use AI for learning purposes. I have only been told of the negatives surrounding AI so this was very eye opening. I hope that I can continue to take this information with me throughout the rest of academic career and my future career.
