Overview
Healthy Living – How can you balance a normal everyday life but continue to keep a healthy diet and feel good about yourself. This topic is incredibly important for both physical health and mental health. Whether it is a hour outside, a group fitness class or a healthy protein packed lunch these simple lifestyle changes can increase your mental health when work life, social life and relationships get tough.
Lesson Objectives
Learners should be able to create a weekly routine that involves all things health. Weekly meal ideas for breakfast lunch and dinner. Daily exercise moments which can include just a simple walk outdoors. Learners will be able to increase their healthy habits in order to balance their mental health and physical health for a positive future.
Read/Watch
Please Read the following weekly plans as well as the articles surrounding mental health.
Content
In order to meet the learning objectives learners must come with an open mind. It can be difficult to change a lifestyle but with slow and simple lesson plan learners will succeed. Learners will need to put time aside in order to prepare each week for the new meals and new exercise plans.
Application
Learners will demonstrate their learning by slowly developing their own weekly plan and actively show an increase in positive mental health. They will use their new skills throughout the rest of their life to work through tough times when daily life gets difficult. They will also use these skills in order to increase their physical health which will benefit them as they age.
REFLECTION
What was your experience of trying out H5P? Which of the activities do you think you would make most use of in your teaching context and what would you use them to do? Which ones do you think require the most resources to create?
I found that downloading and using H5P was very easy and the steps were simple to follow. I enjoyed going through each feature and playing around with the tools. These tools are great for learning activities and make each activities entertaining. I added a screenshot of a multiple choice question I was able to create. The biggest issue I had with HSP was adding the code into the blog and having it work. I think the multiple choice would be used the most in my context as it lets you see different options and can be a simple but effective way of learning. As you can see my multiple choice question is more of a joke but it can help people understand the exact tools and skills to follow when creating a healthy lifestyle.

In the reading, Students Need to DO Something, do any of the author’s experiences with passive learning in K-12 classrooms resonate with your own? Why do you think active learning is not more prevalent in K-12? Have you tried using any of these activities in a classroom? Which one looks most appealing to you?
I only have one memory of passive learning from K-12. Grade 7 I had a teacher who read directly off his slides and sat in a corner. I didn’t learn anything that year and the teacher was actually asked to leave half way through the year. I think active learning is not as active anymore because teachers are given 25-20 students with no help and are expected to have every lesson plan involve more than just note taking. 25-30 kids is a lot and it is more than difficult to have them settled. K-8 have energy they struggle to listen and always creating an active learning space can be difficult without help. I think if teachers were given smaller classes and more tools to do these things it would be more prevalent throughout K-12. I have only ever used mini projects as a way of learning and I still remember each one from each grade. I once created a poster board on Blizzards and how they occur but I also brought ice cream and made my peers Dairy Queen Blizzards. Although this was a small and simple project all these years laters I still remember the information.

I really liked your lesson plan, Kayley! It was very easy to follow along and gain a clear understanding of what the role of the learner is! I think that both mental and physical health are pivotal to our overall well-being. I like how you emphasized that learners must approach the lesson with an open mind and acknowledge that change can be difficult!
I also had a similar experience where an instructor solely read off slides and expected us as learners to immediately understand the course material. This was extremely hard to become engaged in because I did not feel as though I was being included in the lesson. Instead, it felt as though the instructor was just trying to get through the content rather than making sure learners were getting a clear grasp on the information.
